Philosophy of Externship

This mixed Urgent Care/General Practice/ IHE Externship is focused on learning. This externship is offered to 4th year veterinary students. Areas of training include Dentistry, Radiology, Reproduction, Practice Management, Client Education, Fluid Therapy, Laboratory, Pediatrics. General Medicine, Ultrasonography, Surgery, wellness/preventative care and a special focus on compassionate end of life care..

Type of Practice

We offer three types of practice in one building:

Urgent Care: We see same day urgent/emergent cases with an experience staff- a variety of medical and surgical cases

General Practice: Preventative/Wellness Care. We have three FT DVM's that do primary general practice

IHE: Ambulatory in home euthanasia service in our ambulance

Facilities

Newly remodeled in 2022- 10,000 sq ft building

  • 10 exam rooms, one isolation exam room, two dedicated comfort/euthanasia only rooms

  • Two Surgical suites and one dental suite

  • complete in house lab(heska) and pharmacy

  • Digital radiology(Heska Cuattro DR) and Vimago HDVI CT unit

  • Newly purchased (2023) GE/Sound ultrasound for abdominal and cardiac imaging

Types of Cases

Urgent Care- it’s a wild card! You never know what’s going to walk through the doors-from lacerations, seizures, dystocia, diabetes, to less complicated otitis, and gastroenteritis, every day is different!

General Practice- we schedule surgical procedure three days a week and have a strong dentistry practice. Two of our DVMs have a special interest in chiropractic and acupuncture. We have dedicated bilingual staff that see Spanish only speaking appointments on certain weekdays. 

IHE- we schedule IHE and mobile wellness appointments 2-3 days weekly

List of Externship Duties in Practice

Our Externship is focused on learning, and the majority of the time is spent in observation and inquiry. Depending on level of education and skills, hands on experience is on the invitation of the doctor or practicing technician.  The extern will always take the lead from the professionals they are working with and should not hesitate to ask questions while working with them.

1. Learning
2. Radiology
3. Dentistry assistance
4. Assist on ambulatory calls.
5. Assist with in-house medicine and surgery as required
6. Partake in staff and client educational program.
7. Emergency duty assistance.
8. Help with daily cleaning and patient care.

Amount of Supervision

During the program, the extern will either be under the direct supervision of a veterinarian or in lab situations most of the time. We utilize our extensive LVT network to assist in teaching handling and processing of lab samples, and technical skills such as sample collection, IVC placement, radiology techniques etc.
